There are two separate levels of instruction available to fit your level of need. These offerings are designed to get you up and running with enough knowledge to get you from your camera to your printer so you can share an view your photography in print or file form.
For those who want to learn all they can from an accredited school and understand everything from a camera obscura to wedding and portrait photography may I suggest that you check out the New York Institute of Photography. While the instruction below is a great start and will advance your knowledge to levels you might not have realized you could easily obtain, the NYIP course will get you to the level of a professional photographer. The NYIP course takes from two to three years to complete at your pace.
This level of instruction allows you to understand:
The ins and outs of the camera you own.
Show you how to save the files to your computer (if digital) as well as archiving your work.
Work through the course book as needed to assist you with understanding the areas that you are concerned with and having trouble grasping. It is suggested that you get the course book and read it through before using your valuable course hours.
You will be given a written test to learn where you level of understanding is so we know where to start and what you already know so that you don't waste your time or money being taught what you already know.
There is a full 345 page Adobe Acrobat photography course (from an outside source) designed to show you all you need to know about getting started in the world of photography. The CD is $15 if bought outright from Candlelight, or is free if five hours of instruction are prepaid. There is a printed version available for much larger fee.
How much you are able to comprehend in an hour will determine how much you will learn per session. We'll start out with the camera itself and how to use the tools that come with it before we move on to the storage of files or frames. You MUST have read your camera manual at least twice before we get started or you may never catch on.
Here's the thing...camera manuals for SLR (Single Lens Reflex - the kind that have multiple lenses) and D-SLR or very advanced Point and Shoot type cameras are very complicated and take a long time to understand the first time you get a camera or this type. If you have read the manual a few times and are familiar with the buttons and wheels to adjust the camera then the course here is designed to show you how they all work together and make the entire manual clear and understandable.
If you have bought an advanced camera and just use the default settings you'll never get the type of photos that you see the professionals take. Pros know how to use the camera and tell it what to do, they do not let the camera make all the decisions as these tend to be very generic and less then stunning!
Depending on what you wish to learn, this level of instruction gets into the digital realm of
Photoshop with basic digital editing, understanding the power of levels and how to save files in different formats.
Understanding the basic use of lights and how to use natural light and lamps you may already own in a way that avoids the need for advanced studio lights to get studio type quality.
Should you wish to travel far down the digital road...there is the option to take the journey that leads into the world of digital art. This road is full of interesting stops and is only limited by your imagination and willingness to keep going.
You will be given a written test to learn where you level of understanding is so we know where to start and what you already know so that you don't waste your time or money being taught what you already know.
